Develop Your Relationship with the Cosmos
Hi. I'm Dr Mark Westmoquette, former professional astronomer turned mindfulness teacher.
Mindful stargazing is about looking up at the night sky – lungs full of crisp air, senses awake – with wide-eyed curiosity and wonder and considering our relationship with it. It’s not an astronomy class; it’s a meditation on the stars.

Have you ever stepped outside, looked up, and felt something shift? Mindful stargazing invites you into that moment of wonder. In a world filled with noise, distraction, and disconnection, it offers a rare kind of medicine: stillness, perspective, and awe.
Mindful stargazing is not about reading star maps or using technology, understanding scientific concepts or learning the constellations (though you might pick up some along the way). It’s about developing a first-hand, experiential knowledge of what it is to ‘be’ in this vast Universe of ours – through mindfulness. Mindfulness means bring 100% attention to what’s happening in this moment, without judging it to be good or bad.
We might spend time meditating on the knowledge that our bodies are made of material that was made inside a star, we might contemplate images of the cosmos on the projector, and we’ll certainly look up at the night sky – clear or cloudy – with curiosity and wonder. When we do this, instead of the stars seeming cold, distant or irrelevant to our life here on Earth, we feel more in touch with the workings of the cosmos.
Why It Matters
Looking up at the night sky in a state of presence shifts our awareness from the narrow lens of daily stress to the expansive truth of our place in the cosmos. It reminds us that we are not separate from nature—we are nature. Just as stars formed from ancient clouds of dust, so were we.
Mindful stargazing helps us:
Feel grounded and centred and calm anxiety or overthinking – especially in times of overwhelm
Reconnect with a sense of curiosity, which leads to wonder, which easily tips over into awe. Scientific studies have shown that experiencing awe – especially in nature – can reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system and expand empathy. By connecting with something so vast, we gain a deeper sense of belonging and meaning.
Create a profound shift in perspective which encourages spaciousness, fresh inspiration, clarity and a sense of gratitude.
When you start to observe things mindfully, just as they really are, you’ll start to find the secrets of the Universe revealing themselves before your very eyes.
Who It’s For
Mindful stargazing is for anyone who’s ever looked up at the stars and felt something stir inside: nature lovers and night-sky enthusiasts alike, mindfulness practitioners, those feeling disconnected and families who want to share a quiet, awe-filled moment together.
You don’t need any astronomy knowledge, special equipment, or a perfectly dark sky. Whether you’re in the countryside, a park, or your back garden, the invitation is the same: to pause, notice, and connect.
